Help for Society Online Journal Access

If you are having difficulty accessing online journal content via your society membership, please check your computer to see if any Internet privacy programs, such as Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm, or McAfee are running. These programs can block the information needed to authenticate you as a valid user. The instructions below describe how to adjust the settings of Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm and McAfee to allow your online access to work.

Norton Internet Security

Norton Internet Security by default has Browser Privacy turned on, which prevents web sites from retrieving information about what kind of browser you are using and which web site you last visited. The following instructions describe how to disable browser privacy in Norton Internet Security to allow it to work with MetaPress. The process should be similar for ZoneAlarm.

Newer versions:

  1. Open Norton Internet Security.
  2. In the main program window, double-click 'Privacy Control'.
  3. In the Privacy Control Blocking window, click 'Advanced'.
  4. On the left side of the screen, be sure that '(Defaults)' is selected.
  5. On the Global Settings tab, under 'Information about visited sites,' uncheck 'Use default settings', and make sure that 'Permit' is selected.
  6. Click 'OK'.

Older versions:

  1. On the left side of Norton Internet Security window, click Privacy Control.
  2. Click the Settings For arrow and select the account that you want to change.
  3. Click Custom Level.
  4. In the Custom Privacy Settings dialog box, uncheck Enable Browser Privacy.

ZoneAlarm

The process is similar for ZoneAlarm. These are the (minimum) instructions to allow access to work, while maintaining different settings for all other websites:

  1. Click 'privacy' on the left side of ZoneAlarm window.
  2. Click the 'sites list tab'.
  3. Click the 'add' button
  4. Enter the URL in the dialog box: taylorandfrancis.metapress.com. Click Apply then OK.
  5. Right-click the entry in the list and select Options.
  6. Uncheck the box that say Remove private header information. Click Apply then OK.
  7. Repeat step 3-6 for the URL of the site you go to to log in. Only the domain portion of the web address needs to be entered, for example www.homilyservicejournal.com.
  8. You may still receive warnings about 'private headers' being blocked, but should have access to the journal content.

McAfee Privacy Service

A recent update to McAfee Privacy Service has caused some members to experience difficulty accessing society journals online. To allow access to work, please follow the below steps:

  1. Close out of all browser windows.
  2. You may need to be logged into McAfee Privacy Service as the administrator.
  3. Open the McAfee Security Center (click on the McAfee "M" icon on the bottom right corner of your screen).
  4. Select the 'Privacy Service' tab.
  5. Click 'Configure Privacy Service Options'.
  6. Click on the 'Block Ads' tab.
  7. Uncheck 'Block Ads on this computer'.
  8. Click on 'Apply'.
